Afterward reading a gazillion books almost customs helpers, my Three and I have been doing some of the activities from my Community Helpers Theme pack. I love doing these pocket chart sentences with him, because he learns so much!
- Print goes from left to right.
- Nosotros leave spaces between words.
- We say one give-and-take when we bespeak to one word.
My Three (turning 4 in two months), isn't prepare for more than basic concepts of print. But if your child is ready, he tin acquire these things too:
- Bones sight words
- Beginning capitalization and catastrophe punctuation
I printed and cut out all the pieces we'd need. The download comes with plenty sentences for 4 workers: police officer, fire fighter, baker, and farmer. Only ii sets volition fit on your standard pocket chart at i fourth dimension, and so I decided we'd do constabulary officer and firefighter.
First, I asked my Three to find the word I.Since he knows all his letters, this was easy.
I asked him to observe the word "am," and he did and then right abroad. He doesn't know any sight words yet, and then I acted surprised. "Wow! How did y'all know that?"
"Because — this one isI, and this ane isa." He was quite proud of himself. 🙂
He began the commencement sentence on the pocket chart. I reminded him to leave a space betwixt each give-and-take.
I asked him to point to different words that I called out.
"Point to the wordspolice officer."
"Point to the discussionI."
"Point to the give-and-takeam."
Next we began some other sentence. Information technology would brainstorm "Look at my…."
Over again, this wasn't difficult considering the words were all and so different. He was able to use the beginning alphabetic character of each discussion when I asked him to find it.
Since nosotros were doing the police force officeholder sentences beginning, I asked him to find a picture that shows something a police officer would demand.
Now it was time to "read" all the sentences. He began "reading" this style (pointing to the peak line): "I run across a …"
That's a clue that he wasn't "reading" at all … he was reciting. Information technology's okay to do this when we are teaching concepts of print to very immature readers like my son, only as I written report the science of reading I've decided it isn't the best approach for beginning reading. I know promote the use of decodable text when kids are ready to sound out words.
I asked if he wanted to practise the fireman sentences, and he was up for it. So we built those together. Past this fourth dimension he was weary, and his footling sister (22 months) really wanted to "read" the nautical chart herself. We called it quits for the solar day, only another style to conclude the activity would be for him to read the entire pocket chart to me.
